Phillip II.
(1533-1596)

Duke of Brunswick - Grubenhagen (from 1595)

Duke Phillip II. succeeded his brother Wolfgang in 1595. Phillip moved from Catlenburg to the castle Herzberg. Wen he died without children in 1596 after a short reign, the Welf collateral line of Grubenhagen ended. He found his last resting place next to his parents and his brothers in the vault of St. Aegidienkirche in Osterode. Here one can still view the tombstones of the last ruling dukes of the Welf collateral line of Grubenagen. Immediately after the death of duke Phillip II., the small principality in Harz was occupied by duke Heinrich Julius of Wolfenbüttel. The Welfs from Celle protested, raised claims to the inheritance, and complained to the Reichskammergericht (Imperial Chamber Court) in Wetzlar. Only in 1617 did the son of duke Heinrich Julius, duke Friedrich Ulrich of Brunswick - Wolfenbüttel, have to transfer the Grubenhagen inheritance to his Welf cousins from Celle. The Reichskammergericht gave the Welfs from the House of Brunswick - Lüneburg (Celle) final right to the inheritance.
