TRANSPORTATION AND LODGING
The hotel for the conference is the Hilton University of Houston, located on the University of Houston campus. The hotel is located just 200 yards from M. D. Anderson Library, which is where the conference will be held. (On the campus map, M. D. Anderson Library is the large building in the lower center of the map (coordinates F7, building #509) and the Hilton University Houston is the building with the tall addition on top, just to the southeast of the library (coordinates D7, building #590)). A limited number of rooms have been reserved for the conference at the special rate of $118 per night. To receive the special rate, reservations must be made on or before Tuesday, November 2, 2010. After this date, all unused rooms will be released for general sale. The toll-free number to use for making reservations is (866) 327-1161. When making reservations by phone you will need to mention that you are attending the Leibniz Society of North America conference. You may also make a reservation online by going to the Hilton University of Houston website. When registering online, you will need to use the reservation code "LEIB" (without quotation marks).
The two main airports in Houston are William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental. Most, if not all, of you will probably be arriving at Bush Intercontiental, since it has a much greater service area than Hobby. But it will be much more convenient if you are able to get a flight into Hobby airport. Unfortunately, the light rail system is still in its infancy in Houston, and there is as yet no rail service between the airports and the University of Houston campus, where the conference hotel is located. Since the hotel does not operate its own shuttle bus, there are only two feasible means of transport between the airports and the University of Houston campus. The most convenient, but more expensive, opition is taxi, with one-way fare of around $50 from Bush and somewhat less than that from Hobby. The other option is to make an advance reservation with Super Shuttle, which has fares that are about half those of a taxi, and which offers a discount if you purchase a round-trip ticket to and from the Uiversity of Houston campus. The main drawback to the Super Shuttle is that you may have to wait a little longer for your ride, and you will probably be riding with other people who have other destinations, so you may not be taken directly to the University of Houston campus. In case you are interested, and on the off chance that someone may choose to rent a car and drive to the campus. there are maps and driving directions on the Hilton University of Houston website.
